The Design Studio

Richard Miers’ award-winning practice has been designing gardens both in the UK and abroad for nearly 30 years. From country houses to the London town gardens, Richard’s team of talented designers and landscape architects combined experience covers a wide range of projects all of which is brought to bear in every new design.

Recognised as a respected leading light in the industry and named ‘People’s Choice’ award winner at the Chelsea Flower Show 2022, the studio prides itself on its ability to transform ordinary outdoor spaces into the extraordinary. Working with specific craftsmen chosen over many years through careful selection and cultivation, the studio delivers high-end finishes to gardens which are unique, distinctive and exclusive.

The practice puts its clients at the heart of the design process, working closely with them every step of the way to deliver truly exceptional, classically contemporary and timelessly elegant gardens which have a positive impact on the environment.

What can you expect when you work with us? It’s a six-step process...

Step 1: Consultation

We meet on site to discuss your needs, style preferences, and how you’ll use the space. We’ll review the space, explore ideas, and talk through budget, timing, and any favourite plants or materials. If a professional survey is needed, we’ll advise you.

Stage 2: Concept Design

We translate your brief into a concept design showing layout, planting zones, and features like paths, trees, water, or sculpture. After presenting the plan, we refine it with your feedback. Developed drawings follow, detailing materials, levels, and planting types. If work overlaps with house renovations, Stage 3 may be brought forward, with additional fees advised.

Stage 3: Developed Design

You may appoint your own contractor or commission us to create detailed drawings and written specifications for accurate pricing, often with a Quantity Surveyor. These documents cover materials, construction methods, and bespoke elements like fountains or gates. Specialist input (e.g. drainage or irrigation) will be flagged where needed. We can also manage planning or listed building applications and liaise with highways engineers if required.

Stage 4: Tendering and Scope of Works

We prepare a Scope of Works from the detailed drawings for pricing by one or more landscape contractors, either your choice or our recommendation. We brief them on site, review their quotes, and advise on the best fit for your project.

Stage 5: Construction

By overseeing the build, we ensure every detail aligns with the design vision, refining elements as the garden takes shape. We manage contractors, resolve issues, and maintain quality throughout. We source and supply top-quality plants, personally selecting specimens and overseeing soil prep, delivery, and planting. From sculpture to lighting, furniture to plant supports, we’re here to help with every final touch.

Step 6: Your garden’s evolution

After the garden is built, we’re here to support its growth, advising on maintenance and exploring new ideas as it matures. From refreshing borders to adding new features, we enjoy helping gardens evolve over time. Maintenance schedules can be provided on request.
